Stoneware clay is the medium used for most of the ceramic sculptures on this web site. High-fired stoneware can be used for outdoor installations if proper techniques are used throughout the construction, drying and firing of the sculpture. (For additional information, please see Cookson and McNally Public Art Creating Outdoor Weather Resistant Ceramics)

Stoneware clay becomes vitreous after firing, meaning it has a porosity of less than 5%. Most absorption of moisture will be restricted to the surface unless the piece is submerged in boiling water (Outdoor Weather Resistant Ceramics). This protects the work from the weather. With minimal maintenance, these stoneware clay sculptures will last many lifetimes.
